Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

 

The Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) is the senior executive responsible for leading all aspects of Wabash College’s human resources functions, including talent acquisition, employee development, compensation and benefits, performance management, labor relations, and compliance. This leader will perform a critical role in shaping and sustaining Wabash’s culture and sense of community with a primary focus on aligning the college’s talented team with its strategic goals and mission, driving talent acquisition and development, and ensuring a positive work environment.

This position is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced human resource professional to make an impact on our college’s success. The position leads a team of two professionals.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

 Strategic Human Resources Leadership:

Develop and implement a comprehensive human resource strategy aligned with the college’s strategic goals and values, including workforce planning, talent management, succession planning, and diversity and inclusion initiatives. 

Talent Acquisition and Management:

Lead the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding process for all employees, ensuring the organization attracts and retains top talent. 

Employee Development:

Oversee employee training and development programs to enhance skills, promote career progression, and foster a high-performing workforce. Programs include training, mentorship, and leadership development initiatives.

Compensation and Benefits:

Design and administer competitive compensation and benefits packages, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and market trends. 

Performance Management:

Establish performance planning and evaluation systems to support the full performance cycle, including performance planning, performance appraisal and feedback, and improvement planning. 

Employee Relations:

Manage employee relations issues, including conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, supervisor instruction, and ensure compliance with labor and employment laws and regulations. 

Compliance:

Ensure adherence to all applicable employment laws and regulations related to hiring, employment practices, and employee rights. 

Organizational Culture:

Foster a positive and inclusive workplace culture that promotes employee engagement, well-being, and productivity. 

Executive Collaboration:

Partner with senior leadership to provide strategic human resource advice and consultation, influence business decisions, and advocate for employee needs. 

Required Skills

  • Extensive experience in Human Resources leadership roles with a proven track record of success in managing all aspects of human resources
  • Deep understanding of employment laws, employee relations, and human resource best practices 
  • Strong strategic thinking and ability to align human resource initiatives with business objectives 
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills 
  • Proven ability to build and lead high-performing human resource teams 
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret data and make informed decisions 

Preferred Experience and Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or a related field; a Master’s degree and/or human resources certification is preferred (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, or equivalent)
  • A minimum of ten years of experience in human resources management
  • Experience in leading human resources functions in a higher education environment is preferred
